Featured Illustration: Shrine Lanterns

For my Birthday, Rose and I went up to Shrine at Foxwoods. I love Asian Fusion Food. After we finished dinner I decided I wanted to paint some of the lanterns hanging from the ceiling. It's funny but I would never be able to do something like this traditionally. What am I supposed to do whip out the oils and go? The manager would go crazy. That's just another perk of iPainting. I did this one in ArtRage.

Featured Illustration: Rachel The Wolverine

This was a fun little piece that Rose asked me to do for her friend, Rachel. I really wanted to go with turning her into X-23 but I guess there was an inside joke that she was Wolverine. I figured I would continue to test out Procreate for this too. It sounds strange but I don't think I fell in love with it until the very end. It's funny what my process is like sometimes.

Featured Illustration: Paraffin

I got Procreate for iPad (Yes, the name is very lame.) yesterday and I couldn't think of anything to draw. After finishing a very labor intensive portrait I didn't want to use anymore photo reference. Rose suggested I draw her Paraffin kitchen doll. I mostly did it from memory but I couldn't help but glance at the model she made out of clay. Overall I had fun taking on this little experiment.

Rose's Valentine: Memories Of The Island

My girlfriend, Rose is originally from Puerto Rico. For the most part her family still lives there too. It makes sense that she gets homesick sometimes. I wanted to paint her something that would help combat that feeling. I usually paint her at least one thing for holidays too. This was created in ArtRage.

Dream Haven

Recently at The Grove I was taped by Dream Haven. They asked Rose and I about our dreams as artists. Anyway my video is up. It can be viewed here.

Mini Mom & The Hot Tamales

When Rose, my Mom, and I went to get pizza last month she saw the Kitchen Dolls series Rose has been working on. She loved it and joked that she wanted to be a character. Rose came up with the brilliant idea to collab with me and do just that. I would do the background and Rose would illustrate my Mom. I managed to find some photo reference of a plate of tamales and salsa. It got knocked out on my break. Rose finished the kitchen doll of my Mom just after her birthday. We both got sick so it couldn't be helped. (I'm actually still sick as I type this on my iPad.)

My Mom was very pleased with the illustration. It was funny when she asked if I painting the tamales on iPad. I believe her exact words were "It looks so professional!" That's great to here considering it took her a minute to warm up to me making art on my iPad. I guess she thought it wouldn't be the same initially. Rose and I had been talking about working together on a project for a while. I'm sure this won't be the last time since the results are like this.

Featured Illustration: Reina

This is an illustration of my girlfriend, Rose's cat. Specifically this is the companion piece to her portrait. They're basically belated birthday presents. Reina was very challenging for me as an artist. Rendering the fur and the whiskers was an arduous task. Thankfully I eventually figured it out. I'm getting good at making the program do what I want. I saved my pencil layer this time to make things easier. It was a mistake I made for Rose's portrait. I wasn't going to do double work this time.

I'm happy with the result. This was my very first illustration of a feline. I think approaching the cat as another subject to recreate on my iPad was a good way to go. With that mindset it was a little easier. Now if I can just remember how to render fur for future paintings. I guess that's what Penultimate is for.

Featured Illustration: Rose

It's been a year or more since I've been doing portrait work. After seeing the featured artists for Sketchbook Pro and Brushes I decided to get back into it. But what to start with though? At the time it was my girlfriend, Rose's birthday. The plan was to get her an iPod Touch. I also wanted to do something creative for her too. I found a picture her I liked and got started.

Unfortunately she found out about it before it was done. It was probably better that way though. It took me a long time to get used to illustrating portraits on the iPad. I got a slow start and it was a very frustrating process. Thankfully it was worth it. I'd like to give a shout out to Rose for giving me feedback to adjust the anatomy when I needed to and Kyle Lambert for the tips on illustrating hair. What a pain that was. After countless hours this is the piece I have to show for it. It will be the first of a series. It feels good to be into portraits again.

Creative Surge

I've been feeling great about my craft as of late. It's like I can't stop drawing. Right now I'm in illustrator mode. I want to get pieces done to flesh out my Flickr and Facebook pages. I feel like I'll get back to comics shortly though. My main focus now is my girlfriend's Sketchbook Pro portrait. I've been working on it so long though that my inner perfectionist is popping up. So I'm taking on some projects that aren't quite as labor intensive. I started work on one of my favorite characters: Bayonetta from the game that Platinum Games did for X-Box 360 and PS3.

I always thought she had an interesting character design to say the least. Her costume is a real pain but it's coming along. I'll be posting that as soon as it's finished. Just today I finished collecting reference for new Euphony pieces. I'm really looking forward to illustrating those. I'm just going to take the time tonight to put my nose to the grindstone.
