Pogo Sketch Sylus vs. Milano Mi-Sylus

The first stylus I invested in for iPad was the Pogo Sketch Stylus. I've completed nearly all of my Sketchbook pieces with it. It's easy to use and very responsive. It just glides across the screen of my iPad. The foam tip is definitely broken in at this point. Between Sketchbook and Penultimate it got a lot of use. Over time I started looking at more styli. I wanted to find one that was even better than the Pogo. The Pogo is excellent for drawing but isn't as responsive for writing.

Next I decided to get the rubber tipped Mi-Stylus. It claimed to be as responsive to touch screens as the human finger. I wouldn't go that far but it is sturdier than the Pogo. It became easier to write too once I got used to the unconventional point and rubber texture. I have to readjust to using when I pick up again but it's very helpful. As for drawing it can be mixed bag. The rubber tip gives resistance at times unlike the Pogo. It might be better for blocking in solid colors though. I'll continue to use both until I find one that do both jobs.

My iPad as a classroom tool

Yesterday I was working with my student. He had a story prompt to do and I had to modify it for him so we could complete it. Usually I will just do this using a pen and paper. Since I carry an iPad I use it as my notebook too. I went into the Penultimate and created a notebook for Work notes. I wrote out some questions for my student and went over it with him. I don't know if he knew what I was writing on but it was very effective. I'll be able to use the iPad for notes and drawings I may need to make in the classroom. Things go a lot faster this way. Not to mention it's just cool using this tablet in a classroom setting.

Featured Illustration: Reina

This is an illustration of my girlfriend, Rose's cat. Specifically this is the companion piece to her portrait. They're basically belated birthday presents. Reina was very challenging for me as an artist. Rendering the fur and the whiskers was an arduous task. Thankfully I eventually figured it out. I'm getting good at making the program do what I want. I saved my pencil layer this time to make things easier. It was a mistake I made for Rose's portrait. I wasn't going to do double work this time.

I'm happy with the result. This was my very first illustration of a feline. I think approaching the cat as another subject to recreate on my iPad was a good way to go. With that mindset it was a little easier. Now if I can just remember how to render fur for future paintings. I guess that's what Penultimate is for.

Apps I Use Daily: Penultimate

If Sketchbook is my favorite app then Penultimate is number two. This app just seems to get better and better. Basically it's a note taking app. The program lets you create notebooks that you can write or draw in.(Best with a Pogo Sketch Stylus) You can even choose from Lined, Blank or Graph paper. It's like having a Molskine on my iPad.

I haven't used paper and pencil in weeks now. Wrist protection and different font sizes and colors make this app a gem. I highly recommend it. I've been able to keep my Grocery List, Finances and Gym info all in one place. As long as I have this app I will only be using a pen and paper to sign documents.
