I took the reference photo for this painting at the summit of Sleeping Giant. I used my iPhone 4 and the Telephoto Lens I have for it. I wanted to capture that sense of distance and the amazing view I had. After all of that hiking it was a nice reward. I put in all of the background details first and then put in the darker blues. The tree in the foreground was actually the last part to be added. Created in Sketchbook Pro for iPad with a Nomad Brush and Nomad Compose.
Recently my good friend and I hiked some trails on Sleeping Giant. I took a ton of photos with my iPhone 4. When I shoot I always keep composition in mind. Some remain in my iPhonography folder while others take on a new life as paintings. My "Through the Elm" series has been very urban so far. I knew a Sleeping Giant painting would add some diversity. The majority of my Sketchbook Pro work is very methodical and precise but this was the exact opposite. Using the Nomad Brush almost forces me to loosen up. Again the results are consistent with the other pieces in the series. I think it's progressing nicely.
