Savior Illustration: Hunter Lockhart Concept Drawings

It's been years since I've done any concept illustrations but I felt like my Hunter Lockhart character needed a refresh. She is a brigand from my Savior web comic. I wanted to make sure I was happy with her design before I worked on Chapter One. (She makes a very brief appearance.) I also rendered her firearm as well. Flintlock pistols seemed to fit the medieval/steam punk vibe I'm going for.

T-shirt design: New Chibi Reaper

I did this one at work a few days before my art show. I used absolutely no reference aside from the shirt I was wearing. I just like how this new Chibi Reaper is looser than the original. The lines are bolder too.

Student Name tags

I've had this project for a minute but it's finally seeing the light of day. I wanted to reward the class I work with a Troup School for working hard on the CMT. I came up with new name tags for them. Getting them printed was an obstacle but it was worth it. They loved them. The name tags were made using Sketchbook and ArtRage.

Featured Illustration: That 60's Girl

I was giving a demo in my Cartooning class to one of my students today. She was having trouble with portraits. I ended up taking out my iPad and guiding her through my process. It was pretty fun. I liked the sketch I did so much that finished it.

Euphony Series: That 70's Girl

It's been a while since I sat down and worked on my Euphony Character series. While working on another piece I got inspired to do this one. I've had the idea for a few months. (Pretty much after I finished Passion.) I just wanted to produce another one in the series when I was ready.Originally I was going for a style that would scream Celebrity Music Star. The afro made it look like she came out of the seventies though so the theme changed. I'm so happy with the results that I did three versions.

Savior Prologue: The Preview

Just finished the fourth page of my web comic's prologue. I decided to put up a preview. I still have six pages to go but I wanted to put up the finished pieces. I've had this story for years. Thanks to my iPad I can finally color the panels easily and on the go. Look for the remaining six as soon as they're done. The Prologue and Issue One will be on Drunk Duck and Flickr when completed. Speed Painting: Beats Solo HD

I am a gigantic Hip Hop head. For Christmas my Mom got me an expensive pair of Beats by Dre headphones. Sorry Apple but those ear buds just don't cut it. Aside from the sound quality I love the design of headphones too. Just before I left work last week I started a quick painting of them. The style I had in mind was the one I used for my Mom's tamales. I've been coloring my comic book exclusively for weeks now so it's nice to switch it up too.

The King of Pop

This is my last official Christmas illustration. It just got posted late. I painted this for the teacher I work with. She's a huge Michael fan and I love backing myself in a corner with my art. I really should've started something like this sooner but I had something else in mind. I was up until one in the morning but somehow I managed to paint this in one sitting. It was very surprising to say the least. At least I'm getting faster. This project was also important because I hadn't done any realistic looking portraits in Brushes.

This is my first attempt at that but I also have the experience I gained from Sketchbook Pro and ArtRage. It wasn't an easy painting but I did enjoy testing my limits. I mean I grew up on Mike too.

Speed Paintings at Cafe 9

I hung out at Cafe 9 with Rose and my Dad tonight. I had such a great time. There was a live band and everything. I even got a chance to talk about my iPaintings with some musicians there. I always think it's funny that no one quite knows what to make of the iPad. I was showing my Dad new pieces and he showed me off a little. One thing led to another. By the end of the night I was discussing the different art apps I use. The highlight of the night was the speed paintings I did.


I painted the stage and one of the guitarists. I wanted to use Sketchbook Pro for these. As much as I use the app there are still brushes I hardly use. Experimentation was the goal here. I didn't even use my stylus. I was very pleased with the results. It was very surprising that I was able to get so much done so quickly. Gestures are so fun because I can just let go.

Featured Illustration: Cook Kirby

I've been into cartoony character illustrations ever since I finished Sade a few weeks ago. For one I need more kid friendly drawings for the SOAR raffles at work. I also want to do my take on certain characters. Everything I do should add variety and quality to my portfolio. I want a portfolio that shows everything I'm capable of. I went with Kirby because he's an iconic Nintendo character. He's actually more difficult to illustrate than I surmised. I ended up scrapping the first draft for a more refined sketch. Savior Illustration: Great Escape

This is the first piece to promote my web comic, Savior: Fangs of the Reaper. The featured character is The Reaper. I love this illustration so much that I had to do variants. You can see those on my Flicker feed on the home page. This illustration is all about a sense of vertigo. Setting up the perspective was very tricky for this. Sure it's only one point perspective but I had to portray The Reaper running straight up a tower. After I nailed the sketch I just had to worry about the render.

I made a conscious decision to go for a Pop Art meets contemporary comics look. That means I used a soft brush to render light and shadow but I did not blend. Trying to approach my comics like my portraits is suicide. My comic panels need to be intricate but not impossible. I have to write, draw, ink and color btw. Thankfully I have colored him before. I added the old drawing to a separate layer and worked from that. I also had to consider all of the warm and cool colors in the piece. The blast is lighting him from behind and his front is shadowed by a pale purple. (Thank you painting class! ;)

I wasn't initially satisfied with the bricks on the front tower. They looked too flat for my taste. What I did was use a different brush to create a rocky texture on the bricks. The glow from the explosion was done with another brush with the opacity turned way down. (It was a trick I got from Francesco Salvatí on Flicker. He did the original splash page for Sketchbook Pro.) it feels good to be done with this illustration. On to the next one.
