Apps I Use Daily: Photogene

Photogene is an app I recently got for iPad. Filterstorm is okay but I wanted something with more options. Photogene does just that. It allows you to put cool looking filters on your photos, crop, and even play with contrast. It's far from being Photoshop CS5 but it's well done. There's even integration with Twitter, Flickr and Facebook. Now I don't have to email my work to Flickr. I can just go through this way.

I also like the borders that you can integrate with photos. There's one for a stamp and even a movie strip. The presentation could be slicker overall but it gets the job done. It's a very solid app that I enjoy using. I recommend it for photo manipulators and casual photo app users.

Featured Illustration: Spider-Man

This was an illustration I did of Marvel Comic's Spider-Man. It's a few years old but I still like the composition. It was inspired by Todd McFarlane and Bryan Hitch. I drew it, inked it and then colored in Photoshop CS4.

Chibi Characters

I've been a fan of Japanese anime and manga for a for years now. I always thought it was interesting when creators would take their properties and make plush dolls and illustrations. They would be super deformed. They're called chibi characters. Pharrell had a chibi illustration of himself on his first album a while back. I was really inspired when I saw it. So inspired I took my fantasy characters and turned them into chibi characters. I haven't made any new ones for a few months but they hold a special place in my sketchbook.

Drawing with Kids

My day job is as a paraprofessional. I have a few years experience of working with children of all ages. One of the things I enjoy most about teaching is integrating my artwork. Three years ago I started doing work with Easter Seals/Goodwill's Youth As Leader's program. I did various cartooning classes with middle schoolers in the after school program. It opened a lot of doors.

I won a grant through New Haven's Office of Cultural Affairs. With those funds the children gained access to Adobe Photoshop to complete their storybooks. During the year I work at Augusta Lewis Troup School. Just before the year ended I decided to draw for them. They were a great class so I figured I'd reward them. There's nothing quite like having a classroom of kids jumping for joy over your art. I used my iPad to do the drawings quickly and keep things organized. Well that I wanted the practice.
